The Syndicate: This is a criminal enterprise, from a work of fiction, enforced by a dropout from any line of work, a “pig”, as opposed to someone with a real job (there’s a ‘name’ attached, to a structure, perhaps also criminal).
Mob Boss: This man, showed up for tryouts on a first day basis, thus guaranteeing entry, however gave up, and did not return.
Mobster: This man won a bet, any time, including selling a scratch ticket from a store, a member of the ‘organization’, now a permanent criminal.
Gang: These are terrified civilians, that don’t know what’s going on around them, but they’re inside a ‘dragnet’, with cops chasing them (the banks want to know why they haven’t taken advantage of the their new features, to make a deposit).
Civil Corruption: These guys are government employees, that thought this was legal, but it’s not, it’s private sector. They have to contact the press, to snitch out the entire racket, as being informants.
